Dan Murtaugh’s brash Buccos

All year, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has been re-running its 50-year-old stories of the 1960 Pirates season. They capped off the series today, with the game story from Game Seven, which many (especially those in Pittsburgh) would call the greatest baseball game ever played.

There is so much I love about this, but I think nothing is as good as the dateline:

THE HOME OF THE WORLD CHAMPS, Oct, 13 — Bill Mazeroski sailed a homer out of Forbes Field on the second pitch in the ninth inning and the Pirates were champions of the world of baseball.

The other great things are the description of the Pirates as “Dan Murtaugh’s brash Buccos” (remember this?) and this paragraph, describing the hulking Yankees offense of Maris, Mantle, Berra and Skowron:

Two of Stengel’s maulers had hit home runs raising their Series total to 10 and they set all kinds of records, individual and otherwise. But then what the hell, let them have them, the Pirates have what they came out to get 10 days ago.

Two other notes about this game: A crowd of several thousand is apparently standing by the old Forbes Field left field wall right now, listening to a radio replay of the game.

And a full video of this game was recently unearthed in Bing Crosby’s wine cellar. MLB Network is apparently playing it in full later this winter.
